Turning Systemic Problems Into Opportunity: The Career Pivoter’s Mantra

Nov 25, 2025

“What stands in the way becomes the way.” — Marcus Aurelius

Systemic problems, deeply embedded challenges that affect entire societies, economies, or industries, are often seen as irresistible forces. One of my favorite things to watch out for: the unintended consequences of regulatory change, can be seen as immovable objects.

Yet, as Marcus Aurelius reminds us, these very barriers can become the path forward. The most dynamic businesses in fast-growing industries are built to tackle such grand challenges, offering the most fertile ground for those seeking meaningful career pivots.

The companies that react the fastest to systemic problems or regulatory change will win in the short term as first movers, and long term as the experienced innovators.

Environmental Sustainability

With the anticipated deregulation in environmental protections from this administration, companies are reimagining manufacturing, supply chains, and product design to drive decarbonization and resource efficiency. This includes everything from renewable energy startups to circular economy ventures that turn waste into value. For example: Clean Air Fund partners with businesses and governments to reduce air pollution, while organizations like Kaiser Permanente are integrating climate action into healthcare to address the health impacts of environmental change.

Supply Chain Resilience and Transparency

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains, prompting a surge of innovation in logistics, digital tracking, and risk management tools. Technologies such as blockchain, AI-driven analytics, and digital twins are now used to simulate disruptions, optimize logistics, and enhance transparency. AI can now experiment in safe “sandbox” environments, and play out multiple scenarios to help predict potential mishaps and the needed decisions and reactions.

Health and Equity

Precision healthcare and AI-powered telemedicine are expanding access to quality care, especially in underserved regions. These advances not only improve health outcomes but also address poverty by reducing barriers to care. In America, smaller or stand alone hospitals are gravely affected by the changes in health insurance coverage payments. Many have closed, and many more are struggling to stay open.

Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture

Just like with healthcare deserts, food deserts exist all over the globe. Organizations like AGRA are transforming agriculture by supporting smallholder farmers with AI driven tools, improving nutrition with biofortified foods, and building resilient food systems through partnerships with governments, financial institutions, and tech innovators, improving seed value chains.

How These Trends Apply to Strategizing Your Career Pivot

When applying the DANO Method, one can clearly envision the path forward.

1. DISCOVER a new niche or growth industry. Always look to pivot into growth industries that solve future problems, the path is clear: look for frustrating systemic bottlenecks, industries undergoing transformation, and problematic, unintended consequences of regulatory change.

2. APPLY your transferable skills to that niche. Translate your skills into the vernacular of those growth industries. Invest in transferable skills including digital literacy, data analysis, AI, sustainability, and cross-sector collaboration. All are in high demand across growth industries.

3. NETWORK your butt off into those new niches and growth industries.

4. OVERCOME fear of change and repeat this every 4-5 years, as industry growth starts to peak and flatten. Go find the next niche or growth industry.

Be like Marcus Aurelius. Not literally, because he’s dead.

For career pivoters, the lesson is: whatever stands in the way, climate risk, resource scarcity, deregulation, or technological disruption, can become your way.
